It is known that the Fila Brasileiro inherited the solid and heavy body structure and the pattern of the skull from the Mastiff.

From the Bulldog, it gets remarkable resistance to pain and the tolerance to working with cattle.

And from the Bloodhound, it inbred the lose skin, the low ears and long bark.

Fila Brasileiros - History

Fila Brasileiro dogs originated in Brazil. The breed history is closely linked with Brazilian history. Many of the breeds today have been manmade. The Fila Brasileiro is not an exception. This breed seemed to develop from crossing the English Mastiff, Bloodhound and English Bulldog out of pure necessity because the colonists needed a strong, sturdy, and hard-working dog that would be, concurrently, a good cattle driver, a quality jaguar hunter, a skillful guard dog, and a loyal companion. Some also believe that the now extinct Fila Terceirense contributed to the Fila Brasileiro breed, but there is little information on how. The Fila Brasileiro has not always been a popular dog through history. Initially, the proper standard of the breed valued "an extreme" aggressiveness, which resulted in the image of the Fila Brasileiro as being dangerous. This resulted in a reduction of the demand for the breed.

Starting in the mid 70's, changes began to be made in the Fila Brasileiro standard, which allowed for the moderating of the aggressiveness. Today Fila Brasileiros are very popular in Brazil and are among the top ten most popular breeds registered by the CBKC.
